In China people apologize a lot. We apologize for little things because we were taught to do so out of politeness. In treating our guests, we think ahead for possible uncomfort that the guests experience and apologize for those uncomfort, whether we are the cause or not. Because this was a mutually understood etiquette, the one that apologizes always looks forward for some acknowledgement for the care and kindness that he or she shows. For it’s not that he or she feels personally responsible for the one that he or she apologize to.
